Cover-up: toxic waters 'will make New Orleans unsafe for a decade'

Toxic chemicals in the New Orleans flood waters will make the city unsafe for full human habitation for a decade, a US government official has told The Independent on Sunday. And, he added, the Bush administration is covering up the danger.

In an exclusive interview, Hugh Kaufman, an expert on toxic waste and responses to environmental disasters at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said the way the polluted water was being pumped out was increasing the danger to health.

Perfect. Just fucking perfect.

Yeah. I was hearing that a few days ago from some other source, about the debris and chemicals just seeping into the soil like a Love Canal thing. Not even industrial debris either, but regular household construction materials and sewage. Being below sea level, there's nowhere for it to run off to.

I see a city being rebuilt, a former president declaring victory, lots of poor, displaced people moving back the the city...then the birth defects begin.

A problem is also that "They" are using Haliburton and it will be discovered later, the rush to clear the place will result in a lot of mismanagement of resources, corner cutting and outright criminal trespasses against EPA waste disposal regulations.

Mac, if you want a book for the future (non-Mars related), you could get started now before the paper trail becomes too Byzantine.

Actually, I'm playing with an eco-dystopian novel called "Women and Children First."
