I've made up my mind: I'm gonna buy an MP3 player. I just don't know which one. I like the iPod Shuffle, but do I really need something that small? (For ten dollars less I get a moderately larger unit with a color screen and the same memory capacity.) Or should I splurge and get more memory? When is enough really enough?

The truth is that while I genuinely enjoy watching the ebb and flow of consumer electronics, I don't know that much about them.

If any technophiles have any insight to offer before I commit, drop a comment.

Don't spend money on a Yuppie iPod. I have a SanDisk and it works OK. Also, SanDisk uses AA batteries, including rechargeables. So why get stuck with an iPod where you have to charge it through your computer or spend more $ getting a special AC adapter for recharging? Also, if I remember correctly, the built-in iPod batteries die after a few months, forcing you to buy a new unit.

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but is there any difference between the performance of a SanDisk's flash memory and an iPod mini-hardrive?

Of course, if you want your MP3 player in purple or pink, then spend mucho more bucks on an iPod. For around $60 or less you can get a SanDisk in one standard color but with performance to match any Yuppie rip-off.

Thanks, guys. I've had my eye on a Sansa unit, actually. Cheaper -- and probably better -- than the iPod Shuffle, which I'd considered.

Correction to my comment: The SanDisk/Sansa takes AAA batteries. Still, you're not stuck with a built-in battery like the iPod. And there are rechargeable batteries in the triple A size.

Also, I did have one problem with the unit I got when it came to the FM tuner. For some reason it was defaulted to mono reception. I had to go thru the menus and reset it to stereo. (Just in case you get one with FM.)

And to round out my critique, when you put music files on your SanDisk, they might end up under the "Unknown" file. But -- and someone can correct me if I'm wrong -- the iPod can be quirky with file structure also.
