Cellphone gizmos require chromeplaced nude girls

A revealing photo by Bruce Sterling. This package is hysterical -- straight from "Blade Runner." American electronics packaging is wary of the "cyborg" motif; American cellphone ad campaigns are all about "individuality." You hardly ever see explicit robotic imagery.

But the chrome-plated gynoid in Sterling's photo reminds us that despite our misplaced fear of dehumanization, technology -- properly mated with sex -- is as chic as ever. We just don't want to admit it. Witness J.G. Ballard's "Crash."
