I was aware that Billy Idol had put out an album called "Cyberpunk" but didn't realize one of the songs was a direct tribute to William Gibson's "Neuromancer" . . .
I remember William Gibson was not very impressed by this effort and didn't know what Billy Idol was talking about. Remember: Gibson is a Steely Dan fan, where they write just as poetically as he does.
I remember reading (possibly in Mark Dery's "Escape Velocity") that Idol's "Cyberpunk" signaled the official end of the subgenre as a "punk" movement. ;-)
Hey Mac,
ReplyDeleteI was also surprised to find out a little while back too that Billy Idol's "Sweet Sixteen" was inspired by Ed Leedskalnin, of Coral Castle fame.
Kind regards,
Greg
