Nicrosin's amazing Victorian-style mechanical confections deserve to be made real. As it is, he made them from sculpey and watch parts, lining with leather for comfort.
One of the commenters there mentioned Steampunk being a chick magnet. In my case? He's absolutely right. I love the intricacies of it, even if it doesn't work. I don't know why, but I find it all endlessly fascinating.
You caught me, I'm no longer a fan of Boing Boing, but I left that comment when I was feeling a tad cranky.
Steampunk fetishism seems so dated to me though (no pun intended). What did Borges say? "Fame is a form of incomprehension, perhaps the worst." I guess I just don't get steampunk's apparent popularity.
I still "need" my daily (or at least semi-daily) Boing fix, but I think a great number of their items are silly at best. A few years ago I even wrote a post making fun of BB's unending fascination with all things Super Mario and/or Lego.
So, is the actual Bluetooth chip in there? Can a medieval one be made from marble and gold?
ReplyDeleteHey, big surprise, the link went to Boing Boing.
ReplyDeleteDidn't you start to boycott Steampunk, or was that just a dream I had?
I support boycotting steampunk. Historical science fiction should be a genre, not a subculture.
ReplyDeleteI indeed flirted with a steampunk boycott (although not a Boing Boing boycott, as Justin seems to desire).
ReplyDeleteHenceforth I'll refrain from posting s-punk -- even though *some* of it is interesting.
