The public helps keep hope alive for Hubble

"Having once dismissed the robot idea as impractical, NASA officials now say they are increasingly optimistic about the possibility of rescuing the telescope without using the shuttle and its astronauts. The agency announced last week that it would seek bids to build the robot and try replacing the shuttle's aging parts -- primarily batteries and gyroscopes."

The good news is that the Hubble might not be killed off after all. The bad news is that NASA is using the opportunity to figure out yet more ways to keep humans out of space when we need to be learning how to live and work there in increasing numbers.
