Today I received some . . .
disheartening news regarding my graduate school plans. Despite a carefully crafted portfolio emphasizing my publishing history and academic ambitions, I was denied acceptance. The English Department deigned to convey the news via a form letter; to add further insult to injury, my name was misspelled. (If anyone asks, I'm Mr. "Toonies.")
Fucking Midwestern hick universities.
Anyway, I now have no choice but to search for a better school. This wasn't on the agenda -- but then again, very little that happens to me is.

Oh No! Mac, I am so sorry to hear that.
You are a skilled writer with a good sense of structure, narrative and description.
I think they were biased because you write SF. Fuckers.
Try Wash U.
And better luck next time.
Cap'n and WMB--
I wouldn't be at all surprised if my SF writing didn't turn them off. Dumb hicks. This wouldn't be nearly so insulting if I hadn't put as much work putting together my application packet. They wanted writing samples, statements of intent, etc. It took a sizeable chunk of time and effort (and money to pay to take the GRE, which I passed).
I'm not going to bother disguising my disgust. I deserve to be in the program and strongly suspect they automatically dished out grad positions to their own undergrads.
In short, I probably shouldn't be taking this personally, but I am.
I agree, it's their loss.
It's always frustrating to invest time, money and effort into a project and see it go bust. I hope the application materials and exam results can be used at other institutions, which hopefully, will have more intelligent admission officers.
I did giggle at "Mr. Toonies" though. Did it make you feel "animated"? LOL Perhaps your response should be in cartoon form.)
really hate to hear that!--you deserve to be there--try some others--you would probably love a change of location-- there are some really great places out there for you to explore--
That's a drag, though given the "Toonies" maybe you're better off without them.
Take this lemon and make lemonade.
Actually, I'd like to make lemonade and then throw it in their faces.

You're always welcome up here - Nova Scotia has some of the best liberal arts universities in Canada. Acadia, St. Mary's, St. Francis Xavier, Dalhousie, Mount St. Vincent University, King's College - I'm sure you'd find a happy home at one of them!

You would love Wolfville - the quintessential university small town, only 50 minutes from Halifax.
