So within my lifetime, I expect to hear news that at least one complex biosphere has been discovered outside our solar system. I'm curious to see what the reaction will be. I'm not expecting it to be good. We don't have a history of responding well to cosmic demotions.

Sadly, you're probably right. No matter how solid the evidence of a biosphere, *someone* on the payroll will come up with some half-assed attempt to explain it in non-biological terms.
