If life outside of Earth finds us first -- and I think there's evidence it already has -- then we should probably expect it to be engineered. A star-hopping civilization isn't likely to be satisfied with bodies made of meat; it will have long ago transcended to a neo- or post-biological state sure to challenge our very definition of "life."

So even though a godlike alien hive-mind traveling among the stars might be centered in some kind of supercomputer, it might still maintain artificially grown "biobodies" which would then carry out chores like making direct contact with natives who have not yet transcended the need for such bodies, etc.
I think this *might* be what the UFO/close encounter phenomenon is all about...
