Hey Mac -
Yeah, Hoberman's design ideas seemed a good fit for solar sails or antenna arrays that need to pack tight for the trip to space, and then unfurl in controlled fashion on deployment. Unfortunately, the delicacy and precision that make them so elegant in motion is totally trashed if even one joint is struck by a micrometeoroid and bent or disabled.
Pity, that. I bet the Sony people had some grand "space billboards" designed a la Blade Runner, but a little higher up.
Hoberman's awesome designs appear to be relegated to museums, building lobbies and toy shops at this point.
