A Visual History of NASA's Project Constellation

Project Constellation is NASA's spacecraft system which replaces the space shuttle, with flights beginning in 2015 with the Orion capsule and Ares I rocket. This site is a visual record of the concept and design phases.

Awesome stuff, but be warned: the image files are exceptionally massive.

I find it interesting that we are back to the capsule concept with parachutes and water landings.

I thought that we might be using a better system by now. What ever happened to the space elevator.

Then again, after all these years, the wheel still works fine.

I wonder what Burt Rutan would say about this?

Burt's too busy taking Branson's money, but you bet your backside he ain't designing no durn capsules!

And yeah, the wheel still works fine, but I like using a key to start my car instead of hand cranking it in 20 degree weather.

Wow! Amazing pictures! Didn't know they had cameras that good in the 1960s....

I especially like the cross-section view at the top of the page showing one astronaut's boots in a second astronaut's face. Maybe they'll end up tweaking that design a bit....
