I updated my Mars site -- finally. See page 48 for more on the photo above.

"A stunning survey of the latest evidence for intelligent life on Mars. Mac Tonnies brings a thoughtful, balanced and highly accessible approach to one of the most fascinating enigmas of our time."
--Herbie Brennan, author of Martian Genesis and The Atlantis Enigma
"Tonnies drops all predetermined opinions about Mars, and asks us to do the same."
--Greg Bishop, author of Project Beta
"I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in the search for extra-terrestrial artifacts, and the political intrigues that invariably accompany it."
--David Jinks, author of The Monkey and the Tetrahredron
"Mac Tonnies goes where NASA fears to tread and he goes first class."
--Peter Gersten, former Director of Citizens Against UFO Secrecy

OK MAC, if you say that this is a pile of rocks…well then you have just placed your self on the other side, the dark side, the time for fence sitting on the Spirit Rover photos has finally come to an end.
With this artifact we have reached a defining moment in the study of Mars anomalies, where do you stand?
I would like you to state for the record, for history, if you believe the ‘Machine Head’ artifact to be just a pile of rocks.
That’s right, a challenge has been issued by a fellow Mars anomaly researcher, to put your reputation amongst the free minds of science on the line.
You have been called out Mac, what do you say?
From http://marsrelaystation.blogspot.com/
Gerald T:
“Is it possible for a man to look at this object and not acknowledge that it is indeed a machine?
Just what type of mind could remain unaware of the alien ruins after viewing this photo?”
WM Bear:
"Good god. You can see the indidual "engine parts" including that tube that's poking out of the left side."

Gerald--
I left a comment at Mars Relay Station. Wonderfully gnarly formation, but the close-ups are littered with JPG compression artifacts.
AGGGGGGGG!!!!!
'bangs head aganst desk'
we do have fun thou...
I love our outer limits life...
This is a welcome return to your old format over at CI, Mac, well done.
>Curiously, the prominent trailing
>shadow seems to be missing despite
>the low sun-angle.
It seems to me that the sun is not low enough to cast the same shadow. In the Viking photo, the shadow in the crater appears to extend to about 1/4 of the crater floor. In the new photo, the crater shadow is close to the crater rim. I think the sun was higher in the new photo, so you also see a shorter shadow behind the mound.
If it is the Crater Pyramid, why are its initials CM instead of CP?

A damned typo, that's why. :-(
I'll fix it...
Tubes, machines, head-bangin', I don't care. Mac's back at work, and that's enough for me. I'd thought he'd died and gone to NASA! ;-)
Not quite! Thanks for the kind words.
The synthetic structures on the Machine Head artifact are too big for the JPG compression distortion to have any bearing on this discussion, sorry Mac, that’s a Red herring.
Why do you use a cheap debunker trick like that?
As Fred N said be careful when battling with monsters that you don’t become one your self.
I did read some where that all the Spirit photos will be released by NASA on CD someday, in a somewhat higher resolution gif or bitmap format.
That’s going to be a wholenother blog endeavor, comparing the web photos, to the ‘cleaned up’ CD official release photos.
Who wants to play a game of What’s missing from this Picture?
Gerald--
Hold on. If my writing on Mars anomalies serves no other purpose, it's to dispel the popular notion that a conclusive verdict can be reached based on the available evidence.
Even if your images weren't cluttered with image compression, I'd be reluctant to commit myself to a "final answer."
I'm not saying you're wrong, indidentally. Maybe you've found smoking-gun evidence. But until the research community can achieve a verdict -- and explain exactly how that verdict was reached in scientific terms -- then I'm afraid I can't share your enthusiasm.
I'll be happy to continue this discussion via email.
Right you are Mac, my beef is not with you, it’s the with NASA, and the sheer madness of them not getting any high res PAN cam shots of this object, of completely ignoring it.
Our debate cannot be resolved due to the people of NASA’s crimes against science.
But now we have crossed into conspiracy territory haven’t we?
And there no questions about there being a cover up now, what with the Rover having fled the area of this particular anomaly, it simply cannot be blind stupidity can it?
I guess this stage in the Rovers mission has now passed in to RCH’s territory.
I apologies Bear for using your quote with out permission, this is taking on a bit of a circus atmosphere.
Come! See!
The most Amazing and Intricate Mars Alien Artifact ever captured by the rover!
Tubes!
Knobs!
Drums!
Yes!
On display for viewing under the big tent at the Mars relay station!
Perhaps this is what Mac is trying to avoid.
THIS to a compression, transmission, or other digital processing artifact. It's just TOO damn straight -- definitely to straight for a fault line.
Since I posted on the Crater Pyramid I've corresponded with the person who discovered the "furrow." I don't think it's a compression artifact. But whether it looks as impressive in hi-rez is another matter. Interestingly, it appears to lie at a right-angle to the crater, which is unusual.

I think the "oatmeal cookie" is actually a highlighting effect and not an actual surface feature ... but of course I could be mistaken. I'll check ...
Dan Drasin wrote back. The circle ("oatmeal cookie") is a Photoshop effect used to show contrast. Also, the white lines extending away from the circle are illustrative overlays.
This image -- http://www.mactonnies.com/craterpyramid.jpg -- appears in an early edition of Hoagland's book, along with a close-up of the furrow. The feature actually consists of a straight feature with multiple smaller features extending from its length like legs on a caterpiller. I hope the image is online.
