I bought TDKR when it first came out all those years ago. Great story, but not part of the "official" Bats / Supes canon. Even in that version, they come to an... understanding at the end, and then, in the sequel, another.

Like I said, "cautious allies" - which is repeatedly shown in the various crossovers, JLA books, and World's Finest stories. Heck, Batman was the only person Superman would trust with kryptonite, because he knew that Batman would (a) keep it safe, and (b) not hesitate to use it should Superman ever go out of control, or fall under some evildoers control. Now that's friendship!

But, as Mac had noted, I'm a DC universe geek!! :-)
