Hmmm, Iain Banks touched on this in his Culture novels. Culture citizens (if they're humanoid) can change sex at will and are encouraged to have at least one child during their lifetime.
As for myself, call me parochial, it's not for me.
I've never read Banks, but I fully intend to. (John Varley also deals intelligently with gender-bending biomedicine, notably in "Steel Beach.")
