Took me a few days to recognize it, but isn't that the hands of the monsters from "Where the Wild Things Are"?
Actually, no -- but that was a really good guess. The character was some sort of limited edition anime-type critter made by a San Fran artist. Apparently he cranks out tons of them and the retires the designs, making them highly sought-after and collectible.
I wish I could remember the guy's name; I think I might have seen his stuff featured at Boing Boing once.
