Is anyone besides me having difficulty switching their blog from "old" Blogger to "new" Blogger? I'm able to sign into the new version with my Google ID but my "dashboard" is conspicuously vacant. I think this is because the large size of my blog is causing the transfer process to lag. But if not -- and Posthuman Blues suddenly vaporizes because of a glitch -- I'll be mad indeed.

If so inclined, please post grievances/insights as comments. Thanks!

I can't switch over to beta either, probably for the same reason. I have my assistant saving all of my old articles as Word files... just in case! :-)

I decided not to switch until they make me.

The new blogger's OK. Posts are much faster, spellchecker is better , pictures load MUCH faster, etc. The whole thing just feels less clunky. Some new features I have no interest in, such as "labels", which I've always considered a bit of a wank, but overall not bad. My main problem is that the new google sign in never remembers me. I just hope they hurry up and get rid of the old blogger.

I had a response disappear yesterday.

Does the scuttlebutt on the beta version suggest that it is easier for those just starting their blogs and using it from the start, but not for those already using the old version? I'm hoping to get my own blogs online soon, so if that makes any difference I want to know which is the wiser course. Some advice I'd seen suggested that people wait until they have the bugs out of the beta version.

Mac, have you saved your blog in a form that you could use to resurrect it if there were real problems?

Carol--

It seems to me that Blogger's first priority is new users, not longtime users. Supposedly I'll be alerted via email when my online tome is ready to "migrate."

As for backing it up, what's a good way of doing this?

Do you have Internet Explorer? Open up one of your archives - I think yours are broken down by a weekly period - and under File click Save As. You're given three options: Web Page - complete which saves the page as "components"; Web Archive, which saves it as a single page file (mht extension); or HTML only which also seems to save it as a single page. (There is also a plain text option.)

I don't know the difference between the Web Archive - single page (.mht) and the HTML Save As options. I'm assuming that HTML would work with other programs besides Explorer.

Maybe someone else out there knows more about the three different formats.

I'm guessing that the first option, saving the page in components -- separate images, text, etc. -- would make it easier to put it up on another site. Since the images aren't embedded in the file, you could pick out the ones who want to use and upload them as needed. Then you could copy and paste the text to go with the images.

When you save with Web Page - complete, the images and other components are put into a separate file, all linked the main page which is saved outside the file.

I'm writing this off the top of my head; all I can say is to play around with the Save As options and you'll see what I'm talking about. And if you're using another browser besides Explorer, I would guess it offers similar Save As options. Please keep in mind I haven't used the Save As option that much, so I'm not an expert and you might encounter problems that I'm unaware of.

You could also copy and paste your pages into Word but that can get messy with the images and other graphics.

In the meantime, maybe we could convince Paul into starting a class action lawsuit against Blogger... [G]

Best,

Ray

Yep, save all the old stuff, then try breaking it down into smaller blogs, maybe by year. Or wait until January and start a PHB 2007, and just link to the old stuff.

Sorry for not being around, I always enjoy reading here, just can't find the time.

Wishing you a fabulous holiday season and a glorious new year!

Oh god don't get me started, it was a nightmare. I lost all my blog -- I just started over.

Good thing is, I learned that I need to back up my work "now" and not later. Since later never happened, I kept putting it off.

I also have decided to find a host server, my own domain, etc.

The new blogger seems okay; maybe it's easier. I'm too shell shocked to know right now though.

good luck!
