I just bought J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories." The guy at the cash register said "Nice choice, sir." I liked that. Because face it -- most of the choices I make are fucking terrible.
On the walk home, I wrote the beginning of a science fiction story in my head. And it struck me that I should try writing something in plainly stated "juvenile" style (think Rudy Rucker's "Frek and the Elixir"). Cut through all the stage-setting and just tell a story through the eyes of some befuddled kids who happen to have a Moon-sized insect hive hovering in their sky.
Who's in there? What do they want? Does it matter? That's a potential story right there.
