I just spent the better part of two hours downloading and installing a service pack for Windows XP. Things appear to be working fine -- and I even gained a few bells and whistles -- but, frustratingly, online text now appears somewhat clunkier than it used to. Nothing appears to be wrong, per se (knock wood), but I probably never would have installed the pack if I'd known about this.

Ah, Microsoft!
Mac - I just read that there's a Trojan horse masquerading as a Windows service pack. Hate to say it, but I'm wondering if that might be what you got. (Not kidding.) Apparently, people receive an email purportedly from Microsoft, advising them that they need to install the service pack immediately. The link takes you to a Web site that's cleverly designed to look like Microsoft's. Except, instead of downloading and installing a service pack....

Thanks for the warning. Fortunately, I had just updated Norton Antivirus and took the time to run a full system check. Nothing found; I think I'm OK.
I never actually visited a site; I have software that automatically alerts to me service updates, so if this was a hack, it was a particularly ambitious one.
