Speed Freaks: The 10 Fastest Green Cars on the Planet

Among old-school gearheads, conventional wisdom is that gasoline is where the fun is, was and always will be (until the pumps run dry). Alternative-fuel automobiles -- hybrids, diesels, electrics and the like -- are dorky, cumbersome and slow. But a growing body of evidence suggests environmental consciousness doesn't have to mean boring.

Very cool.

One of my fave things is extreme tech implementations--wouldn't mind putting that biodiesel Viper through the land speed record (LSR)course at Black Rock Desert.

Speaking of which, although it is mos' def' NOT green, is the fantastic Thrust SSC, holder of the LSR for nearly 10 years and the forseeable future; check out

The Thrust SSC broke the sound barrier--on land!--going a max of 766 mph. Yowza! (using 3 gallons of jet fuel per second. Cost of this vehicle? $100 million total. Not recommended for daily commute--unless you're BATMAN!)

Sorry, Mac--I couldn't resist noting this uber jetcar. 8^}
