The woman who spent two years on the toilet

She's from Kansas, of course -- no doubt packing a well-thumbed bible. And we Missourians dare to wonder why the world laughs at the Midwest.

How delightfully vain Mac! To think we're even paying you so much mind as to laugh!

But seriously, it must be rather difficult to celebrate Christmas when you're stuck to the toilet.

Urban legend, pure and simple. It has all the qualities. And what always amazes me is peoples willingness to believe these tall tales, which are always couched as though they're been reported by a reputable news source, etc. I have a good friend (a psychologist no less) who's fallen FOR EVERY SINGLE URBAN LEGEND THAT'S EVER COME HIS WAY. I point this out just to express my incredulity at other people's credulity....

I've updated with more news reports as well as videos.

As unlikely as it sounds the basic facts of the story appear true.

Waaayyy bizzarro!

Mr. Bear says urban legend, but how can we be so sure it's a tale?

After all, we've had G.W. Bush for a President for over seven years.

How Gibsonesque, n'est pas?

It's most assuredly not an "urban legend." I live here. I know.

This is from one of the comments on your site:

This has all the hallmarks of a pre-April Fool's Day hoax. The Sherrif's name is Mr. Whipple?! I just can't believe this really happened.

Yes. What is to stop someone who wants to perpetrate an Internet hoax/urban legend from making some authentic-looking videos? Any actor can put on a sheriff's outfit and the news programs didn't identify themselves (there is an AP logo on one video but that's easy to fake).

My guess is that some bored rich guy decided to play a prank and was willing to shell out a bit to pay for the actors and videos just for the hell of it.

Captain Disillusion at your service.

Thank you for shopping Wal Mart.

Anyone care to place any bets? Seriously. I could use a few extra dollars.

Mac -- I might be interested, but we would have to agree beforehand on what constitutes independent verification of this story. I'm not thinking media (which as we all know are easily manipulated). I'm thinking hospital records, etc. (Hey, you live somewhat nearby.)

And unfortunately, the expense and trouble of verifying this story probably exceed any amount a rational person would be willing to plunk down for a bet on its inauthenticity. Urban legends thrive on this very fact. Who's going to go to the expense of falsification?

If I had the time and money, I might actually be willing to have a go at this one though, because the more I think about it, the more I suspect a psywar experiment in disinformation by some intelligence agency rather than some bored rich guy. The videos are obviously professionally done, which smacks of this kind of operation.

WMB--

Dude, the media's all over this one here in town. Names, dates, you-name-it. As bizarre as it sounds, it really happened. This isn't conjecture; it's fact.

Including a sheriff named Whipple? Well do my cats. I remain skeptical but you do have to admit it sure SOUNDS like an urban legend -- maybe an urban legend come true....

I meant "Dog my cats"!

Mac,

I believe the story, we had a similar case here in Fl. Unfortunately this one ended in the womans' death. It was all over our local news when it happened.
