Head Porter x Buzz Rickson x William Gibson

Head Porter, the famed Japanese bag makers, are back with a new collection of vintage military-styled bags. Its design comes from Buzz Rickson, the company responsible for Sugar Cane Denim, as well as iconic flight jackets and Army attire dating back to the WWII era. The bags are drawn from the William Gibson line, which is inspired by the science fiction writer of the same name.

"The shoulder bag costs $340 while the laptop bag goes for $530. The bags are exclusively available in limited numbers from Self Edge in San Francisco. The store is also planning on hosting a William Gibson party on 9 November with the man himself."

"The man himself." Bags from the "William Gibson Collection."

How fuckingly and nauseatingly elitist.

Perhaps, but it looks like a pretty cool bag . . .

I'm just repulsed by the fact that Gibson would lend his name to a high-end ballistic nylon laptop bag that costs more than many laptops themselves cost. Whatever percentage he gets for that is far less than what he loses in "street cred." Truly sickening.

Perhaps he should lend his name to a *low*-end nylon bag instead? I guess I don't understand. Is someone forcing you to buy one or something?

I don't think he should lend his name to any product or advertising. Just seems sorta sleazy, in a weird, counter-intuitive way.

What next? The Ray Bradbury "Fahrenheit 451" fire extinguisher from Wal-Mart? The Bruce Sterling "Count Zero" mirrored sunglasses from Ray-Ban? The William Burroughs memorial "Joan Vollmer" Smith & Wesson .38 Special?

It smells of sell-out, if that makes my sentiment any clearer.
