Apparently I'm not the only one galled by the SETI crowd's smug misrepresentation of the UFO phenomenon.

I broached the subject of the RB-47 case to Seth Shostak while in Mountain View, CA and was treated to (surprise!) a condescending "debunking" to the effect that one must never trust information provided by the military.

Well, of course not, especially when the documented facts in a case like that contradict one's fundamentalist belief system about how best to conduct a search for "extraterrestrial" non-human intelligence, which as we all should know, as per Shostak's mistaken and self-limited perspective, is best done by listening for radio signals for over 50 years, regardless of not having one definitive signal to show for it, and as opposed to the plethora of significant evidence about UFOs he would deny and dismiss.

He seems not even aware that the military attempted to deny, dismiss, and cover-up elements of that case. It was civilian researchers who belatedly revealed and thoroughly documented the truly high strangeness of the 1957 RB-47 incident, not the U.S. Air Force.

It all comes down to a matter of faith, and funding, don't you know.

I really feel kind of sad about Uncle Seth's presumptions, as the Pope of the church of SETI, and his inability to think outside his self-imposed and rigidly hermetic box of misbegotten ideology. As such, he's not an objective scientist, he's a zealous ideologue. Pitiful.
