New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning 8 a.m. Sunday but urged residents to consider escaping "the mother of all storms" before then.
"You need to be scared," Nagin said of the Category 4 hurricane tearing along Cuba's western coast. "You need to be concerned, and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans right now. This is the storm of the century."
"You Need To Be Scared": the mantra of the new century.

Perhaps someone can open a survivalist supply store:
Scared 'R Us
Personally, I favor "FearMart"...
Living, as we do, here on the southern tip of Florida, fear is a cat 4 or 5. These storms are very worthy of their reputation. "Run away...run away!"
I sigh with relief when they pass us by, but my thoughts go with those who are directly in their path.

Yes, I agree with the mantra. Here in Uruguay we used to enjoy an almost peceful weather (they used to say it was impossible to had hurricanes here), and now every 2 weeks we get metheorological alerts regarding cuasi-hurricane storms...
Living in Houston, we're not in the direct path of the storm, but that hasn't kept us from preparing for some repercussions from it.
Yes, we're fairly inland, but with Gustav looking like it's going to circle around the city, we're more than likely in for some stormy weather.
And saying "You need to be scared" in this instance isn't that wacky of a statement. This is a huge storm, and New Orleans residents *do* need to get out ASAP.
A lot of lessons were learned from Katrina...the same mistakes need not be made. Don't try to politicize it...it is what it is, and living on the Gulf Coast, it's something that anyone that lives in this area should be prepared for.
I wasn't trying to politicize it. And I wasn't trying to be ironic when I suggested that "you need to be afraid" has become something of a 21st century mantra.
Certainly, at least in this case, I heartily concur. Be very afraid.
Sorry, Mac, I wasn't aiming that comment at you as much as I was to the public in general. Having read some of the "Twitter" comments you linked to above, I got myself into a bit of a twist.
Katie--
Are you implying that not all Twitter users represent the paragon of reason? ;-)
Pretty much so, yes. :o)
Gustav stomp us here in baton Rouge. Looks like Godzilla came through the city.
